Mark Your Calendars – Worldwide March Against Monsanto in May

Even for those who are not entirely up to date on what a GMO
is, many people have heard of them, and most have heard about at least one
study regarding the potential health and environmental defects caused by
genetically modified organisms.
Nearly all of the corn and soybeans grown in the United
States are genetically modified, and more than ¾ of the processed foods in our
grocery stores contain these two crops. More than 50 countries around the world
have banned GMOs and scores of countries are labeling them. Even multiple
states in the U.S. are introducing labeling legislations.
Regardless of its shady past and its crony background as a
chemical company, Monsanto Corporation has been famous for over a decade now
for being the world’s largest producer of genetically engineered seeds. The
corporation holds a powerful seat with the federal government and has proven to
be corrupt.
Marches and rallies organized by anti-GMO and anti-Monsanto
grassroots organizations have become popular in recent years for not just the
U.S. but also other countries as well.
The latest event coming up is expected to be a big one,
considering it is a worldwide march. On May 25th, 135 March Against Monsanto
events are scheduled to take place in nearly 20 countries and more than 100
cities in the U.S.
On the event page on Facebook, the worldwide events’ mission
statement reads:
- Voting with your dollar by buying organic and boycotting Monsanto-owned companies that use GMOs in their products.
- Labeling of GMOs so that consumers can make those informed decisions easier.
- Repealing relevant provisions of the US’s “Monsanto Protection Act.”
- Calling for further scientific research on the health effects of GMOs.
- Holding Monsanto executives and Monsanto-supporting politicians accountable through direct communication, grassroots journalism, social media, etc.
- Continuing to inform the public about Monsanto’s secrets.
- Taking to the streets to show the world and Monsanto that we won’t take these injustices quietly.
